SMILING
DOLLS
A
woman will wear different types of kimono throughout her life to
indicate her age and marital status.
Although expectations are changing in Japan, age and marital status are
still closely related, and women are still expected to be
married by their mid-to late-20s. From childhood until her
late 20s, a young unmarried woman wears large patterned, brightly
colored kimono with long sleeves, called FURISODE. For her
marriage ceremony, she may wear several special bridal
furisode with design motifs that are meant to bring luck to her
marriage. In general, as a woman ages the kimono(s)
that are deemed appropriate for her have smaller patterns, more subdued
colors, and smaller sleeves. The dolls are 4-7" tall.
